EU DPP registry is live - with a test environment
The European Commission has brought the central registry for Digital Product Passports into operation together with a test environment; the first hard deadline is 18 February 2027.
On 20 July 2026 the European Commission brought the central registry for Digital Product Passports into operation - together with a test environment in which companies can try out the connection before the first deadline. The legal basis is Articles 12 and 13 of the Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2024/1781.
What the registry stores
Not the product passports. What is registered per passport is the unique identifier and a small amount of metadata; the actual product data stays decentralised, with the economic operator or its service provider. The registry therefore works as a verification and search layer for market surveillance and customs, not as a European product database.
Alongside a secured web interface, the Commission provides an API. For ranges with many variants or frequent batch changes, that is the route that matters in practice, because every change can be reported system-to-system. Technical documentation, implementation guidance, webinars and a helpdesk come with it.
What changes in practice
The party that has to register is the economic operator who places the product on the EU single market - as a rule the manufacturer, which for own brands means the brand itself, and for imported goods the importer. Pure distributors who resell third-party branded goods already present in the EU do not register.
The first hard deadline is 18 February 2027. It concerns large batteries under the Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542: EV batteries, industrial batteries above 2 kWh and LMT batteries, which include e-bike batteries. Anyone affected can use the test environment from now on to check the connection instead of building it for the first time in February 2027.
What does not change
Operating the registry creates no general registration obligation. For the ESPR product groups such as textiles, furniture or tires, it arises only with the respective delegated act. And a registry entry is not proof of conformity: what information a passport must contain is still governed by the act for the product group - a complete entry with an incomplete passport remains an infringement.
