Best DPP software 2026: the honest provider comparison
“The best DPP software” does not exist. There are four fundamentally different provider types, built for completely different companies - and the most common expensive mistake is choosing the wrong type. This comparison shows the market landscape, the eight criteria that really matter and how to determine the right type in ten minutes.
Why a DPP comparison works differently in 2026
With most software categories you compare feature lists. With the Digital Product Passport that still cannot be done cleanly in September 2026 - but no longer for the reason that applied in early summer. The horizontal technical standards are now available: on 27 May 2026 CEN/CENELEC published six harmonised EN standards - covering data exchange protocols, unique identifiers and data carriers, among others - which have been cited in the Official Journal of the EU since 15 July 2026 and therefore trigger a presumption of conformity with the ESPR; details in the standards overview. Two further standards (access rights/security and data authenticity/integrity) are still outstanding. The actual reason why providers still cannot be compared cleanly on the basis of feature lists now lies elsewhere: the product-group-specific delegated acts, which set exactly which data fields a textile or furniture passport has to contain, have largely not yet been adopted. The central EU registry has been in operation since 20 July 2026 - operators enter the unique identifier and metadata there, while the actual passport data stays decentralised; more on this in the guide to the EU registry.
Two things follow from this:
- Nobody can sell a finished, certified EU DPP solution. Anyone claiming otherwise is selling a promise, not conformity.
- The most important selection criterion is not today’s feature set but the speed of change. You are buying a provider who will keep up with the legal act updates of the next three years for you - not a frozen feature set.
The only reliable element so far is the schedule: the battery passport is fixed at 18 February 2027, and the ESPR product groups follow in stages (details in the deadline overview). Anyone who has to deliver by then is selecting now - with incomplete information. That is exactly what this comparison is built for.
The four provider types on the DPP market
The biggest mistake in provider selection happens before the first demo appointment: companies compare solutions that do not solve the same job at all. The market divides into four types.

For context: the classification is based on the providers’ public positioning (as at July 2026), not on a functional test. You will deliberately find no price and feature ticks per provider here: in a market ahead of standardisation these details change every quarter, and a table with outdated figures is worse than none. Check the specific points from the conversation checklist directly with the provider.
Type 1: supply chain and raw material platforms
These platforms grew out of traceability, not out of product communication. Their strength is verified data exchange across several company boundaries - for example when you have to demonstrate which mine the cobalt in your cell comes from. Circulor is recognisably focused on battery and EV supply chains, Minespider on raw materials and due diligence obligations, Circularise on controlled data exchange in industrial value chains.
The catch for smaller companies: the benefit of these systems only arises once your suppliers take part. If you buy your goods from three garment makers in Portugal and receive material data by email, you are paying for an infrastructure you cannot fill.
Type 2: enterprise compliance and ESG suites
Here the DPP is one building block alongside CSRD reporting, supply chain due diligence and product compliance. osapiens positions the product passport as part of broader sustainability workflows, Siemens and T-Systems bring the industrial and platform background, and Spherity addresses cross-sector, regulation-driven DPP rollouts.
The maths works out if you are steering several regulatory projects in parallel anyway and need governance, roles and audit trails centrally. It does not work out if the DPP is your only compliance topic - in which case you are paying for a platform and using one module.
Type 3: DPP specialists for consumer goods brands
These providers think about the passport from the end customer inwards: the QR code is not just compliance but a brand channel on the product - care and repair instructions, origin story, secondary market. Narravero is the best-known example of this orientation in the German-speaking market, with a focus on fashion, furniture and consumer goods.
Sensible if the passport is to become part of your brand experience and you have the budget and the editorial resources for it. Less sensible if you simply have to get 400 articles compliant by the deadline.
Type 4: self-service tools with shop integration
The most recent type and the only one where you can start without a sales process: software that uses your existing product catalogue - usually from the shop system - as a data source, flags missing mandatory fields, validates the passport and publishes it. No implementation project, but also no multi-tier supply chain verification.

Regardless of type: these eight points are where serious DPP software separates from QR code generators with a new label.

Which type fits you?
Three questions are enough for a robust shortlist. But clarify a fourth beforehand: do you actually have to create the passport yourself? Anyone who is a pure distributor in regulatory terms needs no data capture software, only a reliable way of making the third-party passport accessible in the shop - that is a different and considerably cheaper job. Question 1: how deep does your evidence obligation reach into the supply chain? Do you have to demonstrate origin across several upstream tiers in verified form (batteries, automotive, raw materials)? → Type 1. Is information from your direct suppliers enough? → Type 3 or 4.
Question 2: is the DPP your only large compliance project? Does it run in parallel with CSRD, supply chain due diligence and product safety projects in a group structure? → Type 2. Does it stand alone? → Type 3 or 4.
Question 3: where does your product data sit today? In the shop system, maintained and current? → Type 4, because the import takes care of the largest block of effort. Spread across spreadsheets, PIM and supplier documents with no leading system? → Clarify the data source first; no software repairs unclear data management.
For the effort side behind this - data collection, maintenance, internal time required - it is worth looking at the cost calculation for DPP projects. It shows why the software selection is important but not the most expensive item.
The five most common mistakes in the selection
Mistake 1: selecting by provider size instead of by type. The market leader in type 1 is the worst choice in the field for a 200-article brand - not because of a lack of quality, but because the system expects preconditions you do not meet.
Mistake 2: falling for “ESPR-certified”. This certification does not exist in 2026. Ask instead: how quickly was the last draft legal act reflected in the product, and what does that cost me?
Mistake 3: checking the import route only after signing the contract. With 400 articles, the difference between automatic catalogue import and manual data entry quickly amounts to several weeks of working time - a multiple of any licence fee.
Mistake 4: forgetting the maintenance. Material changes, new suppliers, expiring certificates: the passport is a living document. In the demo, do not test creating passports but changing 50 of them at once.
Mistake 5: overlooking the QR code lock-in. Data export is rarely the problem - the URL is. If your printed QR codes point to a provider domain, a change of provider is only possible with relabelling or a permanent forwarding commitment. Clarify that before the first print run.

- How does my existing product data get into the system? Please show the import live.
- What happens if a delegated act brings new mandatory fields? Who bears the effort?
- Where are the public DPP pages hosted, and what availability commitment is there?
- Do you generate GS1 Digital Link conformant QR codes?
- How do I change 50 passports at once, for example on a material change?
- Which version history can I put before market surveillance?
- Are you already connected to the EU registry - and since when?
- If I terminate in two years: what do I get exported, and what happens to my printed QR codes?

The question “which DPP software is the best?” has no serious single answer in 2026 - but it does have a robust method: first determine your provider type via supply chain depth, compliance environment and data source, then check the eight criteria and ask the nine questions from the checklist in the demo appointment. This order prevents the most expensive mistake: buying a technically excellent platform that was built for a different company from yours.

A corporate group with raw material due diligence needs something different from a D2C brand with 200 articles in the shop.

What should I look for when selecting DPP software?
Eight points: coverage of your product group and legal basis, data import from existing systems, validation against the mandatory information, hosting and availability of the public DPP pages, data carrier under GS1 Digital Link, versioning and record-keeping, connection to the EU registry active since July 2026, and the exportability of your data. These points separate serious solutions from QR code generators with a DPP label.
As a small company, do I need an enterprise DPP platform?
In the vast majority of cases, no. Enterprise platforms are designed for multi-tier supply chains, raw material due diligence and group governance - functions that a brand with a manageable range neither needs nor can service. For brands, retailers with own brands and SMEs, a self-service tool with shop integration is usually live faster and considerably cheaper.
Can I change provider later?
Yes, if you pay attention to it when signing the contract. Clarify in advance whether you can export your product passport data in fully structured form and who owns the public DPP URLs. If the URLs sit on a provider's domain, your already printed QR codes depend on that domain - that is the real lock-in with the DPP, not the data format.
