Digital Product Passport: an example, explained element by element
Regulatory texts stay abstract - a real product passport does not. Using a textile example, we show which elements a DPP contains, why each of them is required, and how customers and authorities see it.
The example: a lingerie article with a product passport
Our example comes from the Vienna-based brand Soda Lingerie, which publishes product passports for its range with SolveDPP - here for the article “Modal Soft Bra” (art. no. SL-2041). A QR code sits on the sewn-in label; scanning it takes you to the article’s public DPP page.
Let us go through the page element by element - looking each time at why the element is there.
1. Product identification
At the very top are the product name, brand and article number - linked to a unique identifier through which precisely this article (and, in future, the individual batch) can be addressed. This is the foundation of every product passport: without unambiguous assignment, all further data is worthless.

The full fibre composition in percent - not just the “main material” - is one of the core data items for textiles. It makes products comparable and is the basis for every recycling decision at end of life.

Instead of a blanket “Made in EU”, the passport shows the stages of the supply chain. It is precisely this origin transparency that, in practice, requires the most preparatory work - and that builds the most trust in D2C sales.
4. Certificates and evidence
In the example: OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 and the TENCEL™ certification. What matters here is less the logo than the verifiability: in the product passport, certificates are tied to validity periods and supporting documents, rather than standing as a mere claim on the product page.
5. Care, circularity and take-back
Care symbols, repair instructions and the note “Recyclable · Take-back via manufacturer” close the loop: the DPP is not only meant to document but to actively support longer use and the correct end of life of the product.
6. The QR code as a data carrier
The QR code on the label is the required data carrier - the passport itself lives online and remains updatable. If a supplier changes or a certificate expires, the DPP page is updated without a label having to be reprinted; older versions remain traceable via versioning.
What this example generalises
The textile example follows a pattern that applies to all sectors - only the data fields change: for batteries, cell chemistry and carbon footprint take the place of the fibres; for furniture, wood types and spare parts; for tires, rolling resistance and wet grip. What does a Digital Product Passport look like?
In practice, the DPP is a publicly accessible product page reachable via a QR code on the product. It shows, in a structured way: product identification, material composition, production steps with locations, certificates, care instructions, and information on recycling and take-back.
Does the product passport have to be publicly accessible?
Yes, the information intended for end customers and authorities must be freely accessible - without a login or app. Depending on the delegated act, there may additionally be data fields reserved for specific actors such as market surveillance or recyclers.
Isn't a normal care label enough?
No. The physical label remains, but the DPP goes considerably further: it is machine-readable, contains origin and conformity data, and must be updatable. The QR code on the label connects both worlds.
Can I publish a product passport before the obligation applies?
Yes - and many brands do exactly that. Transparency about materials and origin acts as a selling point in the D2C business, and the data base is built before the obligation takes effect.
