When does the Digital Product Passport become mandatory? All deadlines at a glance

The DPP obligation does not arrive all at once but sector by sector: the battery passport comes first on 18 February 2027, followed by the ESPR product groups. Here you will find all the key dates - and what needs to be done before then.

An important note on interpretation: for the ESPR product groups, the years indicate the point at which the relevant delegated act is expected to take effect under current EU planning. The obligation becomes binding once the act is adopted plus a transition period (usually 18 months) - so the timing may still shift, but the direction is clear.

Batteries: the first hard deadline (18 February 2027)

The battery passport does not come via the ESPR but via the EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542 - and its key date is fixed: from 18 February 2027, every EV, industrial (over 2 kWh) and LMT battery needs a digital product passport. “LMT” (Light Means of Transport) directly affects e-bike and e-scooter brands. The data to be recorded includes cell chemistry, capacity, carbon footprint, recycled content and proof of conformity.

Textiles & tires: the first ESPR wave (from 2027)

Textiles and tires are at the top of the ESPR working plan. Under current planning, the delegated acts are expected in 2027; the DPP obligation then applies after the transition period. Textile brands also face an earlier fixed date: from 19 July 2026, large companies may no longer destroy unsold textiles and footwear - a clear signal of how seriously the EU takes this sector.

Furniture and mattresses: 2028 and 2029

Furniture is among the ESPR priorities; the delegated act is expected for 2028, and for mattresses for 2029. Both sectors have a high D2C share - those who build up their material, origin and recycling data now spread the effort over several years instead of squeezing it into a deadline project.

Toys: DPP instead of declaration of conformity (around 2030)

For toys, the product passport arises from the new EU Toy Safety Regulation 2025/2509. The special feature: the DPP replaces the previous declaration of conformity. The obligation applies after the transition period around 2030 - many toy brands are nonetheless already preparing, because the passport will supersede their central safety evidence.

Electronics: staggered rollout from 2026

Electronics and household appliances enter the DPP not on a single key date but in stages - via the energy-label carryover (dishwashers from 2026, refrigeration appliances and EV chargers from 2028, smartphones and tablets from 2030) plus horizontal repairability requirements under the ESPR from 2027.

What to do before the deadline

Regardless of sector, preparation follows the same pattern:

  1. 12-18 months before the key date: clarify whether you are affected, analyse data gaps, inform suppliers.
  2. 6-12 months before: capture and validate material, origin and evidence data for each article.
  3. By the key date: publish DPP pages, integrate QR codes into labels/packaging, establish a maintenance process.

You will find the fundamentals of the product passport itself - data categories, technology, implementation - in the main guide Digital Product Passport. Frequently asked questions

When does the Digital Product Passport become mandatory?

The first hard deadline is 18 February 2027: from then on the battery passport is mandatory for EV, industrial and LMT batteries (e.g. e-bike batteries). The ESPR product groups follow step by step - textiles and tires expected from 2027/2028, furniture from 2028, mattresses from 2029, toys around 2030.

Which is the first sector with a DPP obligation?

Batteries: the EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542 requires the digital battery passport from 18 February 2027. This also affects e-bike and e-scooter brands whose batteries count as LMT batteries.

Does the DPP obligation also apply to small businesses?

Yes. The obligation is tied to placing products on the EU market, not to company size. The ESPR provides support measures and in some cases longer transition periods for SMEs, but no general exemption from the product passport.

What happens if I miss the DPP deadline?

After the key date, products without the required product passport may no longer be placed on the EU market. Member states' market surveillance can impose sales bans, recalls and fines; the specific sanctions are set by the member states.

When should I start preparing?

Allow 6-18 months before your key date for data collection and processes - depending on the size of your range and the state of data in your supply chain. Obtaining proof of origin and material evidence tends to take the longest.
