What is the Digital Product Passport? The definition
The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a machine-readable, digital data set that brings together the most important information about a product across its entire life cycle - from materials and origin to repair and recycling instructions. It becomes accessible via a data carrier directly on the product, usually a QR code: end customers, retailers, repair businesses and authorities scan it and see the stored data.
The DPP is therefore not a marketing label but a regulatory instrument of the EU: it is designed to make products comparable, enable a circular economy and make greenwashing harder.
The legal basis
The Digital Product Passport does not come from a single law but from several EU regulations:

Who does the Digital Product Passport affect?
It affects anyone who places products on the EU market - that is, manufacturers, importers and, in some cases, distributors with their own brands. Company size is generally irrelevant to the obligation; even small D2C brands must comply (details in the guide DPP for SMEs). The order of the sectors follows from the regulations and the ESPR working plan:
- Batteries & e-bikes - first hard deadline on 18 February 2027 → DPP for batteries & e-bikes
- Textiles & apparel - first ESPR wave, delegated act expected in 2027 → DPP for textile companies
- Tires - also part of the first ESPR wave → DPP for tires
- Furniture - expected in 2028 → DPP for furniture
- Mattresses - expected in 2029 → DPP for mattresses
- Toys - around 2030 under the new Toy Safety Regulation → DPP for toys
- Electronics & household appliances - staggered via the energy label from 2026 → DPP for electronics

What data must a DPP contain?
The specific mandatory data is defined by the relevant delegated act or regulation. Across product groups, however, the same data categories recur:

How does the DPP work technically?
Three building blocks make up the product passport:
- Data carrier on the product - usually a QR code, alternatively NFC or RFID. It must be easily accessible and permanently readable.
- Unique identifier - every passport is tied to a unique product identifier; the GS1 Digital Link, which combines article number and web address, is widely used.
- Decentralised data storage - the data stays with the company or its service provider; the EU is building a central registry through which passports must be discoverable.
Important: the DPP is a living document. If materials, suppliers or evidence change, the passport must be updated - versioning and sound data maintenance are therefore part of compliance.
