Why the deadlines arrive in waves
There is no single date from which the Digital Product Passport applies to everyone. The EU introduces it product group by product group: for each group a separate delegated act under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) defines which data the passport must carry.
Two separate regimes run in parallel. The EU Battery Regulation brings the battery passport with a fixed date, and the EU Toy Regulation introduces the passport as a replacement for the declaration of conformity. If you sell both, you are planning against different legal bases at once.
Fixed or expected – why the difference matters
Only a few dates are fixed to the day. For ESPR product groups the years indicate when the delegated act is expected to take effect. The obligation only becomes binding once the act is adopted, plus a transition period of usually 18 months.
In practice: an expected year can move, the direction cannot. If you wait for the act itself, the transition period is your entire project budget – and for supply chain data collection that is usually tight.
Batteries: the first hard deadline
18 February 2027 is the only date in this overview that is fixed to the day and triggers a genuine DPP obligation. From then on every EV, industrial (over 2 kWh) and LMT battery needs a digital battery passport.
LMT stands for Light Means of Transport, which puts e-bike and e-scooter brands directly in scope. The passport must cover cell chemistry, capacity, carbon footprint, recycled content and conformity evidence, among other things.
Toys: a passport instead of a declaration
The EU Toy Regulation 2025/2509 has been adopted, and its distinctive feature is that the product passport replaces the existing declaration of conformity. For toy brands the DPP is therefore not an extra obligation but a new format for evidence they already maintain.
The requirement applies once the transition period ends, around 2030. Many manufacturers prepare earlier because their core safety documentation depends on it.
Electronics: a rollout, not a deadline
Electronics and household appliances do not enter the passport on one date but through the energy label carry-over: dishwashers from 2026, refrigeration appliances and EV chargers from 2028, smartphones and tablets from 2030.
On top of that come the ESPR's horizontal repairability requirements from 2027. For electronics manufacturers it pays to build the data structure once, cleanly, and extend it per product group.
How this checker calculates
For milestones with a fixed calendar date – the destruction ban on 19 July 2026 and the battery passport on 18 February 2027 – the countdown shows years, months and days. It is calculated once when the page loads, not ticked up second by second.
For every other milestone no exact date has been published. The checker uses 1 July of the year shown, flags that assumption visibly in the result and reports years and months only. Suggesting a day-precise deadline where none exists would be misleading.
