The twelve data points that come up almost every time

What a product passport must carry is set by the delegated act for each product group. Across every draft so far, though, twelve points recur: unique product and manufacturer identification, article number and GTIN, material composition, origin and production sites, recycled content, substances of concern, durability and care, repair and spare parts, take-back and disposal, conformity evidence, and the data carrier on the product.

Those twelve points are exactly what the configurator maps, and the completeness meter shows how far your current data reaches. The gaps are the real result: they show where you need to chase suppliers, long before your product group’s deadline arrives.

Why the data carrier is the underestimated part

A product passport is not a file you store once. It is a permanently reachable resource behind a data carrier on the product – usually a QR code. The passport you download here already carries one and is readable offline. That is enough for internal alignment, supplier conversations and as a template.

It is not enough for market access. There the identifier has to resolve uniquely and permanently, even when your shop, your domain or your range changes. A QR code printed on a product cannot be corrected afterwards, so the choice of identifier decides early how expensive later changes become.

From draft to binding passport

Allow 6 to 18 months before your deadline for data collection and processes. Sourcing origin and material evidence takes longest in practice, because it reaches across several supplier tiers and often has to be secured contractually.

Frequently asked questions about the DPP configurator

What exactly does the DPP configurator produce?

It builds a complete Digital Product Passport from your product data: identification, materials and origin, circularity, use and repair, conformity, and an embedded data carrier as a QR code. It also shows the legal basis, the deadline and the expected mandatory data for your product group. Anything you leave blank appears in the passport as an open item.

What is the minimum I need to enter?

Only the product name is required. The passport becomes useful from around eight entries: product name, brand, product group, article number or GTIN, material composition, origin, recycled content and a disposal note. The completeness meter shows you continuously how far your current data reaches.

What format does the passport come in?

A single HTML file. It opens in any browser, works without an internet connection and can be saved as a PDF via the print function. The QR code is contained in the file, and no fonts, images or scripts are loaded from anywhere else.

Is the generated passport legally binding?

No. It mirrors the structure of a Digital Product Passport and is meant as a planning and alignment aid – for supplier conversations, internal work and as a template. It does not replace audited conformity documentation, and the binding scope of mandatory data only arrives with the delegated act for your product group.

Why is only one download free?

The configurator is there to show what a product passport looks like and which data you are missing – one passport is enough for that. A real range needs passports that stay reachable online, change with the product and carry a QR code that still resolves years later. A file cannot do that; the SolveDPP app can.

What happens to the data I enter?

The preview is built entirely in your browser. For the download your entries are sent to the server once, rendered into the file and discarded immediately. The only thing stored is a salted hash of your IP address, so the one-download limit can be enforced. The IP address itself is never kept.
